Hammered rings make great components for jewelry. Rather than buying these components, you can make them yourself from thick wire and the seams with coiling.
Start by forming a closed ring out of a thicker gauge wire (18 ga or lower). Use a Flat face Hammer (FH) to flatten the ring against a steel bench block. Rotate the ring a quarter turn every few taps to flatten evenly. If the rings starts to open up, use Chain Nose (CN) pliers to close the gap, being careful to retain the original ring shape. Continue alternating between FH fattening and CN adjusting until the desired affect is achieved. Optionally use a Ball peen Hammer (BH) on the last round of flattening. Use many very light taps instead of heavy hammering to texture the surface evenly without warping the ring.
This technique uses fine gauge wire (24 ga or higher) to hide the seam in the ring. You can also simultaneously create a small loop from which to hang a dangle.
You don't want to actively wrap the coil directly over the seam because it is too wrap the wire too loose or too tight over the seam. Instead, start by coiling the wire around the ring just a few times right next to the seam. Then slide the coil over the seam before continuing to coil on the other side of the seam. This will help create a nice even coil all the way across the seam. Now that you have a coil hiding the seam, you can trim the wire and use chain nose pliers to secure the coil in place.
Another option is to add a loop from which to hang a dangle. Place a thick piece of wire or mandrel next to the coil on the outside of the ring to serve as spacer for the loop. The spacer should be thicker diameter than the dangle wire to ensure the dangle will hang freely from the loop. Wrap the coiling wire around the spacer and ring one revolution until the coiling wire is pointed toward the center of the ring. Remove the spacer and thread the dangle into the coiling wire in the loop left behind. Then continue coiling the wire around just the ring.
Another option is to make the loop front facing by orienting the spacer perpendicular to the ring face. Curve the coiling wire around the spacer so that the wire is pointing toward the center of the ring and thread on the dangle. Grip the wire loop just below the ring (black arrow in the figure) to keep from deforming the loop while continuing to wrap the wire around the ring in the opposite direction.
